Day 3 of the adventure of a lifetime brought Dr. Neil and his family to the City of David, the starting point of Jerusalem.
Just outside of the location of the Western Wall is irrefutable evidence of the City of King David. The dig is still active, and it is obvious as you walk through it. Evidence predates this city prior to the old City of Jerusalem. Why was it important? Simple, they had the water source/spring. What is simply astounding was that they dug a tunnel to bring the water from the spring under the city almost 1400 meters through solid rock. It ended in Retention pond, which is called Shiloah's pool. This tunnel was dug by hand by 2 teams from 2 different directions and yet they were successful. Along with the tunnel for the water (Called Hazekia's Tunnel) they had a second tunnel to walk underground, as well as a third tunnel for sewage. The Sewage tunnel just opened about 90 days ago and we were able to walk it. Pretty cool stuff.

Just keep in mind I am not such a religious person, yet I found this stuff fascinating. Next, we saw the location of the Last Supper, certainly a location of interest for people of many faiths. It was directly over King David's supposed tomb. While there we witnessed a Cardinal from the Vatican visiting Jerusalem as well.

Afterwards, we spent our afternoon touring the Yad Vashem museum, which contains the history of the Holocaust. This is the third Holocaust museum I have now visited and certainly one of the most moving. Staying politically neutral, I will just say it is impossible to deny that this genocide occurred. Yet there are people today that say just that. What I find most interesting is the intense focus to record the "survivors stories," as only approximately 25% of the survivors are still living. Initially many of the folks did not want to talk about it, as it hurt too much to discuss. Unfortunately, now so much time has passed that they need to talk about it, so that everyone knows their stories and it never happens again. Unfortunately, based on stories in Darfur, etc., the world has not learned this lesson yet. Therefore, memories must be recorded to be shared with the children of the world for their own sake.

Dr. Neil began the second day of his adventure by meeting Yifat, his Israeli Dentsply contact. He delivered the workbooks for his lecture next Wednesday, along with some supplies for the course. Then, Dr. Neil and Yifat discussed logistics for the course.
Day 2 in Old Jerusalem
Our Holy land tour continued today, but this time from afar with a view of the walled City from Mount of Olives, which is the Sacred burial site that overlooks the walls of the old city. We toured the facility that the Dead Sea Scrolls are stored in as well, and even visited parliament today. I can honestly say I was ignorant to the history of the Dead Sea scrolls, but their history is astounding. We ended our day with a fun visit to the zoo. Overall, we ran like chickens but received the education of a lifetime in under 8 hours. Our guide Tsion is retired, but used to work for the government touring Dignitaries. He must be related to the Energizer Bunny as he never tires.

Now, here is the crazy part:
Tsion lived in Skokie, Illinois for about 5 years in the 90's, and his children went to the same high school system where my wife and I first met. Go figure, I had to fly almost 10,000 miles to meet a neighbor... this once again proves the world is smaller then you think!

Many of our Get It Straight Orthodontics patients know that Dr. Neil lectures outside of the office and had plans to travel to Israel this holiday season. Over the next few weeks, Dr. Neil has decided to take our office along and share some family memories, on what he feels will be a most exciting and memorable trip. Enjoy!
The trip begins
My family and I traveled to Israel yesterday. I have a few days prior to my teaching days so we are on tour seeing what makes Israel such a unique and special place. Whether you are religious or not, there is a bit of history on every rock that is turned here.
Today, we visited the Western Wall and left blessings for those that we love. We toured the old City of Jerusalem and walked the Via Dolorosa, the path of agony that Jesus took prior to his death. This city is very interesting, no matter what religious background you come from. Following that we toured the local market, which was quite fun and chaotic. Since today is the beginning of the Sabbath, everything stops at 3 PM, which is fine because the time is 8 hours ahead and my family is still adjusting. I hope everyone, both patients and employees back at Get It Straight, enjoy the photos, as much as we did taking them. No Orthodontics was done today, but the day was still a personal milestone nonetheless.
